Who turned off the sunshine?
About two months ago we moved to a house located almost exactly 45 miles west of our previous house. It’s almost a straight, horizontal line if you connect the two houses on a map, and it would be a very quick drive if Mount Charleston wasn’t in the way. Given that we never, ever had winter temperatures below 27 degrees at the old house, it’s just mind-boggling to discover that temps in our new location are dropping down as low as 14 at night! And it’s only late November… I have no idea how my wimpy, thin blood is going to survive until the end of February, although I’m starting to make concessions like not constantly going barefoot. Even the kitchen was only 63 degrees early this morning, so it’s going to be a looong winter. The dogs aren’t any more used to it than we are and quickly run outside to pee before flying back in again, and the cats all huddle around a little portable heater. I’ve got the house thermostat set at a balmy 74, which I realize is a huge luxury, but it still feels like we moved to Minnesota or something. I still think about eventually moving us all back to Canada but don’t know how any of the humans or animals would cope with things like snow and sweater and (ack!) mittens. The one good thing is that there are very few outdoor, stray animals here, but I feel sorry for all the strays we used to feed at the old house as I doubt anyone is caring for them or putting out shelters for them as we used to. I hope they’ll all be okay until the cold breaks.
A health update: Jackson Monroe continues to show improvement and to put on weight after going back on his raw food diet, and other than a round of the sniffles, the others are healthy and active. The older dogs are definitely showing signs of arthritis with the cold weather, but luckily their pain meds work well and make a big difference. On our “wish list” for the moment is another portable heater for the parrot room as I can’t seem to keep it a constant temperature (lots of evening heat loss through the window), but we’re mostly muddling along okay. It’s been such a long year… when I have my silent, New Year’s eve mental retrospective there’ll be a lot to look back on.
